BATA Kimono Jacket

The BATA Kimono Jacket — Kotoko is an ongoing Because of War Study exploring symbolism, resistance and visual language through a contemporary wrap jacket. The illustrated composition is built around the porcupine, a symbol historically associated with resilience and the ability to defend from every direction. It is surrounded by stools, crossed weapons, botanical forms, architectural references and symbols drawn from the wider visual history being examined for the garment. Rendered in the Archive colorway, the bone-toned illustration sits against a black ground, giving the textile the appearance of an archival drawing or research plate. This product is currently in development. Final construction, materials, sizing, dimensions, pricing and release information will be announced after the research and sampling process is complete.

The BATA Kimono Jacket — Kotoko is being developed as a wearable research object within Because of War Study 001. The textile composition centers on the porcupine, a symbol associated with resilience, collective defense and the capacity to respond from every direction. Around it sit stools, weapons, botanical forms, architecture and symbolic marks gathered through the research process. Rather than presenting these elements as a literal historical reconstruction, the design reorganizes them into a contemporary textile language. The black and bone Archive treatment gives the artwork the appearance of a preserved illustration, field drawing or research plate. The jacket is still undergoing research, material development and sampling. Its final construction, materials, fit, sizing and release details will be published only after the design has been fully resolved. BATA belongs to Study 001, Because of War’s first research-led collection examining how conflict, movement and cultural memory create new forms.
